Barbecue Inn
About us
For nearly seventy years Barbecue Inn has served the Greater Heights/Garden Oaks area of Houston, Texas. Four generations of families have come through the doors and returned often to experience the finest in Southern comfort food, personalized service, and old-fashioned hospitality; making this family-owned restaurant a landmark in the Houston area.
Our history
The Barbecue Inn was founded in 1946 by Louis and Nell Skrehot. After finding the perfect location on Crosstimbers, Louis began converting the little house, building a new storefront façade, and the original barbecue pit. Starting with a simple menu of Barbecue, Louis added other items over time. Their sons Louis, Jr., and Wayne, “The Brothers,” as they became known, began busing tables and learning the family business at an early age; knowledge that would later prove very useful.
After serving in the Army, “The Brothers” both returned home to run the restaurant. They successfully incorporated everything their father taught them, and with hard work, determination, and an entrepreneurial spirit they expanded & built the current restaurant in the same location. It is the 50-year partnership of Louis Jr. and Wayne that is responsible for making the Barbecue Inn the thriving business it is today.
When asked, “What’s the best entrée on the menu?” Well…”IT’S ALL GOOD!” The Barbecue Ribs are To-Die-For, and the Brisket & Chicken are just as tender. For 60+ years the Barbecue Inn has served some of the best-fried seafood in the Gulf Coast area; Fresh gulf Shrimp, lightly battered & fried to perfection has been an all-time favorite, along with the Catfish, Fried Oysters and, Stuffed Crab (one of the family’s many secret recipes). Don’t forget the popular milk-battered Chicken Fried Steak, a tried and true favorite over the years. Finally, you might be surprised to learn that the most touted item on the menu at the Barbecue Inn is actually the Fried Chicken, nationally recognized by Travel & Leisure and Food & Wine magazines, America’s Best Bites, and a host of others who agree that we have some of the Best Fried Chicken in the U.S.A. All entrees are cooked to order, but be prepared to wait 25-30 minutes for the Fried Chicken. Some things are just worth the wait, and according to the experts, our Fried Chicken is one of them.
Come in today and you will find Wayne and his son, David continuing this third-generation family tradition. Not much else has changed since 1946. We hope when you enter our doors that you will enjoy a step back in time where Service is still provided by an Experienced & Friendly Wait Staff, Real Food is still carefully prepared by Caring Cooks, and the Restaurant Owners are still present & involved in the day to day business.
